The profound meaning of a text is usually expressed by unique linguistic means. This paper argues that the language patterning plays an important role in depicting the relationship between the mother and sons in Pangs of Love. Through analysis of language patterning which features four groups of contrast and contact in this story, this paper suggests the relationship of both alienation and connection. This study illuminates a new way to look at the relationship between the two Chinese American generations.
