Abstract
The word ‘clerk’ has experienced an evolution from ‘clergyman’ to ‘assistant’, during which its‘cleric’meaning is gradual y lost. The paper mainly focuses on the semantic changes. It achieves some discoveries of the problem in the historical event, the Reformation. Besides, it has also explored dif erent meanings of ‘clerk’ in various stages.
