Heritage Information Research Trend and Case Studies in Korea
This study introduces the status of heritage information research and related research cases in Korea.Heritage infor-mation research has a purpose for promoting accessibility of digital heritage data and usability of heritage information. In this paper,we analyze heritage information research trend and introduce highlighted methodologies and case studies in Korea. They are digital curation, visualization of heritage data based on cultural heritage-related knowledge, and Historic Building Information Modeling(HBIM).Digital curation facilitates the preservation, management, and use of heritage data possessed by cultural heritage institutions in-cluding museums and increases the accessibility to heritage data. For this purpose,we have developed data labelling and visualization technologies specific to cultural heritage so that users, such as curators, cultural heritage experts, and museum visitors, can easily and quickly access the information that they want through the correlation between artefacts. We came up with a web-based labelling tool for cultural heritage data and applied it to data on 45,692 artefacts from the National Museum of Korea. We also invented a web-based visualization tool that converts lists of attribute information in Excel spreadsheets into visualized content and edits the attributes.Heritage Data visualization aims to improve the communication efficiency of information using graphics and promote under-standing when appreciating artifacts. For this purpose,we developed visualization tool for understanding the relationship between the artifacts with explanation according to pattern and meaning. We designed the functions and UI/UX design to be inserted into the data management program and data visualization program. In addition, the arrangement of artifact information can be changed to word cloud visualization centered on artifact meaning and timeline visualization.HBIM can enables information management for each component of heritage including architectural heritage and artifacts. For that purpose,we establish a component classification system to build a database according to building and component codes and per-form procedural modeling of component units in traditional buildings.A parametric component grammar was created, and functions and rules were systematized based on the written script and set as a template for representing the correlation between components. In the future, heritage information research is expected to be conducted on the metadata design of digital heritage that reflects the characteristics of heritage data and on an ontology design that defined the semantic relationship between heritage data.Research on artificial intelligence-based storytelling, intelligent heritage data platform and world heritage interpretation data is also expected to increase access to heritage information.
