Survey Method and Establishment of a System for Protecting and Sustaining Historic Buildings:a Case Study of Chaoyang of Liaoning Province
Historic buildings are important physical carriers of history and culture in urban and rural China. To carry out survey of historic buildings properly have important implications for the establishment of a system to protect and sustain historic and cultural heritage. In recent years,China has increasingly intensified its protection over historic buildings.Since it started the national historic building survey in 2016,by the end of November 2021,about 57,000 historic buildings had been identified, almost increased by five times compared with that in 2016.Despite the significant achievement in the survey of historic building in China, studies on technolo-gies and methods used in practices and theories relating to the survey of historic buildings are still of great importance in the research field.Based on the survey of historic buildings in Chaoyang of Liaoning Province, the authors carried out field survey and applied research methods such as typology, induction and deduction in this study. On the one hand,a method is developed for conducting a survey of historic buildings, which consists of following procedures:planning before action-identifying the target-planning together, developing together-understanding the history and value of historic buildings,so that all the space and key elements relating to his-toric buildings can be covered. On the other hand, based on the value of historical and cultural heritage, the authors analyzed the ag-glomeration features of the survey targets to further promote the definition of historical and cultural streets and historic sites from a holistic and systematic perspective to support the establishment of a system to protect and sustain historic buildings.Compared with previous studies, this study has the following breakthroughs.Firstly, this study has its merits in practicality.Veri-fied through practices,a replicable method for conducting a systematic survey of historic buildings is established. It can directly pro-mote the identification of local historic buildings.Secondly, this study has its theoretical value.Systematic, comprehensive perceptions and concepts about heritage protection are interpreted from the perspective of the survey method, which,to a certain extent, provides theoretical support for the following:survey methods relating to the planning of heritage protection, survey of potential protection targets, perceptions and concepts about historical and cultural value, establishment of a system to protect and sustain historical and cultural heritage, protection and utilization of linear cultural heritage, and the fourth national survey of cultural heritage that is soon to be started. This study arrives at following conclusions.Firstly, the value of a historic building is not isolated;instead,it is an important com-ponent of the value of a historical and cultural city. The survey confirmed that the value of historic buildings should be understood from the perspective of the value of a historical and cultural city.Secondly, the value of both a single historic building and historic building complex should be understood. Therefore, historic buildings and their historical environmental elements can all be protected.Thirdly, more emphasis should be put onto systematic protection of historic buildings.Attention should be paid to the links between historic buildings and historic city districts, villages and towns,as well as historical and cultural streets, historic sites, and cultural heritages,so that the maximum support from historic buildings for the protection of a historical and cultural city can be achieved.
