Layout Changes in Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building in Beijing
Located at Caishikou in the south of Beijing,Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building is an important component of townsmen association-based culture in Xuannan area.As Beijing continuously develops as an ancient capital with contemporary,urban characteristics,it has become a new theme of current era to thoroughly explore the implications of cultural relics while revitaliz-ing and utilizing the relics to achieve sustainable cultural development of the ancient capital.Townsmen associations'buildings as the cultural components with the most prominent characteristics in Xuannan area have become the focus of revitalization and utilization of heritage buildings in Xicheng District of Beijing.Among many townsmen associations'buildings in Xuannan area,Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building is well known by the public as it was once the residence of Lu Xun,who gave the building cultural implications which are so extensive that no other townsmen association's building can match.Revitalization of Shaoxing Townsman Association's Building will not only involve restoration of the building,but also provide a leverage for revitalizing townsmen associations'buildings across Xuannan area and the capital.With Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building being used as an example of revitalization of heritage building,the Re-vitalization Program for Xuannan Townsmen Associations'Buildings may be further investigated,and the cultural implications of the communities around Fayuan Temple will be thoroughly explored.In this way,a cultural zone characterized by Fayuan Temple,Shaox-ing Townsmen Association's Building,and the Niujie Mosque can be established,so public awareness about Xuannan culture can be increased,too.By studying the texts on two stone tablets titled with Records of Shanyin and Kuaiji Townsmen Associations'Building(山阴会稽两邑会馆记)and Records of the Newly Renovated Worshipping Hall of Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building(绍兴县馆新葺修禊堂记),respectively,the author re-established the layout of Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building when it was newly built in Qing Dynasty.Meanwhile,based on the works created by Lu Xun and the memories of Lu Xun's relatives and friends about Lu Xun's residence in the building,the author conducted comparative analysis to identify small changes in the layout of the building during the time of the Republic of China.Moreover,comparative study was also carried out on current foundation layout of the building to present an overview of the changes in the layout of Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building.This study may serve as reference for the restoration and repair of Shaoxing Townsmen Association's Building while the building's cultural implications are being thoroughly explored.
