The Features of Spatial Distribution of Hydraulic Facilities along Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Based on Database Development
As the longest, best conserved artificial canal known to the world,Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal plays a very important role in the global canal research system. While hydraulic facilities constitute some components of the water engineering system adopted by the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, previous studies on the facilities mainly focused on the circumstances under which they were built, their historical changes and operation theories from a historical perspective. There is a lack of studies on the spatial distribution of such facilities.Through literature review, the authors collected information about hydraulic facilities by reviewing and summarizing various literature, and obtained detailed coordinates of these facilities. At the same time,on-site surveys of hydraulic heritage were carried out,and a detailed digital model was established to build a comprehensive water facility database, based on which, this paper,by us-ing Arcgis 10.8 software to conduct kernel density and clustering analyses, summarizes the features of the spatial distribution of the facilities.Referring to four types of waterway structures used by the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, this paper analyzes the factors affecting the spatial distribution of hydraulic facilities from two perspectives, namely, natural and societal environment, and conducts an empirical study through structural equation modeling and applying linear regression models. The study shows that natural environment plays a decisive role in the spatial distribution of hydraulic facilities. In areas where the ground is steeply sloped with complicated hydrogeological conditions,in particular, where the waterways cross each other,or where the water control gates are,or where there is a lake, hydraulic facilities are likely to agglomerate. In addition, societal environment also affects the spatial distribution of hydraulic facilities. In areas where economy and culture prosper with a dense population, the facilities are widely distributed. This paper expands previous studies in the following two aspects.Firstly, hydraulic facilities are the focus of research, and a rel-evant database is established to fill in the gaps in studies on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, making hydraulic facilities a separate subject in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal research system.Secondly, statistical methods are applied to the study on the spatial distribution of hydraulic facilities, producing more scientific research results. This paper studies the spatial distribution of hydraulic facilities along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and provides referable data for the activation and utilization of such facilities, which will help to protect hydraulic heritage in a centralized manner, facilitate the establishment of an eco-friendly corridor and a cultural zone along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Moreover, this paper also provides the basis for formulating the strategies for special protection and utilization of hydraulic heritage along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
