Global Actions on Cultural Heritage under the Influence of Climate Change:Reviewing the International Co-Sponsored Meeting on Culture,Heritage and Climate Change
The climate change and even extreme climatic events have severe effects on natural and cultural heritage worldwide. In re-cent years, many countries and international organizations have been exploring the protection practices of culture and heritage.International organizations and institutions have been closely monitoring and discussing the conditions of culture and heritage protection in the face of climate change. The International Co-Sponsored Meeting on Culture,Heritage and Climate Change is the most high-standard academic sym-posium on this theme globally. Its outcomes consist of scientific research reports and a series of white papers. This paper reviews the outcomes of the International Co-Sponsored Meeting on Culture,Heritage and Climate Change in three aspects. The first is the systematic linkage among culture, heritage, and climate change. Many parties carry out protection practices of culture and heritage and establish diverse knowledge systems, playing different roles in climate actions. With a common goal of culture and heritage pro-tection,the parties are connected by culture and heritage, addressing the influence of global climate change through joint efforts. The second is the effects of climate change on culture and heritage.Climate change is manifested as increasingly frequent ex-treme climatic events, posing growing risks to many sites of culture and heritage.International organizations and institutions,includ-ing the United Nations Educational,Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO),have monitored and assessed culture and heri-tage under the influence of climate change and recorded the effects, compiling a database of culture and heritage under protected and affected conditions.Through systematic data collection, these organizations have assessed and predicted the scale of the influence of climate change, while the assessment has advanced to quantification. The third is the response of culture and heritage to climate change.Against the backdrop of climate change, culture and heritage can support climate actions to a certain extent, responding to climate change in two main ways:adaptation and mitigation.Culture and heritage adapt to climate change with initiative and planning, and at the same time, culture and heritage mitigate the effects of climate change. These two ways complement each other, harnessing the potential of culture and heritage to respond to climate change and contributing to climate actions. This paper reviews the climate actions discussed at the International Co-Sponsored Meeting on Culture,Heritage and Climate Change, and summarizes domestic climate actions with suggestions. It attempts to provide reference for adapting and mitigating the effects of climate change on culture and heritage in China.
