Maintaining and Expanding the Path of Cultural Heritage Protection Paved by the Venice Charter
This paper briefly summarizes the significance of the Venice Charter and its impact on China, clarifies the need to adhere to the spirit of the Venice Charter, and points out that although China has put forward a national strategy to cope with changes unseen in a century, the national strategy alone is far from ensuring smooth conservation and inheritance of cultural heritage. It is necessary to draw on conscientiously the basic work line shown in the international documents represented by the Venice Charter, and should pay attention to its complementary and vigilant role in the process of China's cultural heritage conservation. It is not wise to rely solely on the universal principles instead of making specific analysis of individual cases.Without the full analysis of the specific cases,it would be blasphemous and ignorant of the charter to implement the principle. In the 60 years since the Venice Charter, the cultural heritage conservation movement has become a global movement involving a large number of Third World countries.Further it explores the contributions of eastern culture to world heritage conservation based on China's experiences while it emphasizes the urgency to take the sustainable conservation actions as for the great impact of China's urbanization on heritage conservation since 1990s.It concludes that contemporary scholars should stand with mutual understanding of civilizations, protect the testimony of all human civilizations, sort out the useful experience and theories, and figure out how to deal with future challenges.
