A Critical Reflection of the Influences of Venice Charter and the Nara Document on Authenticity on the Preservation of Monuments in Germany
This article deals with the Venice Charter and the Nara Document on Authenticity and their influence on German preservation of monuments and their legal protection.To begin with,the authors will explain the significance and the history of the creation of the Venice Charter and apply it to the historical situation in Germany.The Venice Charter came into being around 10 years before the legislation on monument protection in Germany and had a major influence on the legal text.This is made particularly clear by the attitude of German monument conservation towards the historicity of the monument and the associated preservation of the substance.The second part discusses the term of authenticity,which was first used in the preamble of the Venice Charter and then was reclassified in the various cultures and traditions of the world with the Burra Charter and especially the Nara Document of Authentic-ity.Main reasons for both the development of the Nara Declaration on Authenticity as in the context of the evolution of the World Heritage Convention will be considered.Finally,the third part of the article discusses influences of both the Venice Charter and the Nara Document on Authenticity with regard to current challenges concerning the preservation of monuments in Germany.
