Composition and Generation of Community Connections under the Living Heritage Approach:A Case Study Based on Yannan Garden of Peking University
The living heritage approach, emphasizing the relevance of heritage to the community and placing the core com-munity in a leading position in living heritage conservation,is increasingly emphasized in today's heritage research. However, the interpretation of the concept of"community connections"under this approach has been insufficiently explained in existing litera-ture,and the explanation of the intrinsic composition and generation path of community connections in living heritage still needs to be developed. This paper explains the composition and generation of community connections under the living heritage approach through the case study of Yannan Garden of Peking University. The Yannan Garden buildings of Peking University were built in the 1920s and are still in use today. They are an important part of the"Yanyuan Architecture around Weiming Lake",a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level. The buildings were included in the list of the first batch of historical buildings in Beijing in 2019.Adopting the qualitative research method, this paper takes the students at Peking University as the research object and collects data through various methods, including questionnaires, focus group interviews, and semi-structured interviews.A total of 791 question-naires were collected,6 focus group interviews, and 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted, covering 65 interviewees. It was found that community connections of living heritage can be further understood as lifestyles, historical perceptions, and spiritual and cultural symbols, which refer respectively to the participation in shaping the lifestyles of the associated community based on its materiality, providing the associated community with embodied historical perceptions of the heritage and the locating area, and being the spiritual and cultural bearer due to its associated events, past, etc. The generation path of community connections of living heritage has three features:the path is influenced by individual differences based on the materiality of the heritage;the path is gener-ated through practice and integrated into the life of the community, showing the daily features;and its psychological process is influ-enced by both perception and cognition.Compared with previous literature, this paper further expands the interpretation of the community connections issue of living heritage and provides insights to make up for the limitations of the conventional heritage conservation methods focusing on static and material conservation in heritage conservation practice. The first is to emphasize identifying and evaluating the community connec-tions in living heritage conservation practice, introducing community participation;the second is to maintain the daily interaction be-tween the community and the heritage;the third is to focus on both the material and immaterial characteristics of the heritage;and the fourth is to pay attention to the internal interpretation and dissemination of the heritage. This paper is a case study with a qualitative research method based on the survey of a specific group, and proposes a reference framework with enlightening value, which needs to be empirically tested and further expanded by more empirical studies in the future.
