The Approach to Developing Heritage Tourism in National Archaeological Site Parks from the Perspective of"Space Production"
In recent years, significant achievements have been made in developing national archaeological site parks. The devel-opment of archaeological site park tourism has become a hot topic for cultural and tourism consumption. The transformation of many archaeological sites into parks has been completed, representing chinese approach to conserving and sustaining archaeological sites. However, some problems persist in some areas, including the process of conserving and developing archaeological sites simultane-ously,strategies for heritage display and interpretation, approach to tourism development, and tourists'experience during their visits.Feasible development approaches and models are yet to be improved for the transformation of archaeological sites into parks and the development of heritage tourism.Focusing on the current status of tourism development and the approach to space production at Liangzhu National Archaeologi-cal Site Park and through literature review, field surveys, and thorough interviews, this paper studies relevant theories and conducts empirical analyses.Applying national standard Classification,Survey and Evaluation of Tourism Resources, this paper carries out a comprehensive evaluation of the tourism resources and a holistic review of the current status of heritage tourism development as well as interpretation and communications of heritage value at Liangzhu National Archaeological Site Park.Based on the evaluation and review, this paper then introduces the trichotomy framework developed by Henri Lefebvre for space.Combining the"physical-cultural-social"logic in the field theory, this paper systematically analyzes the physical, spiritual, social, and spatial structure features of the spaces produced for tourism at Liangzhu National Archaeological Site Park.A thorough investigation is carried out on the pro-cess and development model for producing space for heritage tourism, which integrates physical, cultural and social spaces. Moreover, based on this case study on Liangzhu National Archaeological Site Park, this paper summarizes and analyzes universal experience to establish a primary approach to the production of space consisting of three components, namely, physical, cultural and social space, for heritage tourism. This approach emphasizes that the reproduction of cultural landscape in the physical space should be promoted in spatial practice;guidance should be provided to highlight the value and implications of cultural space in representations of space, and social space should be re-established for tourists to sense and experience in representational space. This paper may serve as a refer-ence for integrating multiple spatial components, including spaces designated for heritage and tourists to visit, relax, and experience. This paper applies the theory of"space production"to deconstruct the space produced for heritage tourism at national archaeo-logical site parks.A comprehensive analysis is carried out on various actors who produce space, including the authorities, experts, scholars, enterprises, heritage communities, tourists, and factors affecting the"space production",including power, capital, and interests. This paper explores the application of the theory of"space production"to research on cultural heritage, enriches the inter-pretation and practices of this theory in the field of cultural heritage research, and provides new perspectives for studies on archaeo-logical site parks and cultural heritage. This study identifies the patterns in shaping and building the space for heritage tourism at archaeological site parks and the components for"space production"based on a thorough analysis of the model adopted by Liangzhu National Archaeological Site Park.A primary mod-el for"space production"is established to integrate three components for archaeological site parks, enriching the approaches to practices in the adaptive use of cultural heritage at archaeological site parks. This study has certain theoretical value and practical implications in terms of promoting high-quality development of national archaeological site parks in the new era, facilitating the conservation and sustainability of cultural heritage at national archaeological site parks, and boosting the development of society and economy in harmony.
