Progress in Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis is a common musculoskeletal disease, its pathogenesis is complex, and the effect of surgery and drugs is not good,so it is of great significance to find a treatment to delay the progression of the disease and improve joint function.Extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWL)is a special type of acoustic wave, which is mainly induced by pneumatic, electrohydraulic, electromagnetic or piezoelectric generators to generate a single pulse of transient acoustic wave, focusing on the area in need of treatment. It has been confirmed that it can effectively inhibit the release of a variety of inflammatory factors, improve cartilage metabolism, promote the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes, and has a certain effect on cartilage repair. Therefore,as a new treatment,it has shown an effect on osteoarthritis in some animal experiments and clinical studies. As a safe and effective non-invasive therapy,it can be recommended for the treatment of osteoarthritis, but the level of recommendation needs to be discussed in further studies. This article reviews the mechanism and application of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in knee osteoarthritis.
