The Impact of Quality Control Circles on Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurses' Awareness and Management of Ventilator Alarms
Objective To explore the influence of the quality control circle activity on nurses' cognition and handling of ventilator alarms to ensure the safety of ventilator therapy. Methods A total of 116 mechanically ventilated patients from January 2022 to May 2022 were selected with random number table method as the control group before the implementation of quality control circle activities.A total of 114 mechanically ventilated patients from June 2022 to October 2022 were selected with random number table method as the observation group after the implementation of quality control circle activities. The control group adopted the traditional nursing method, and the observation group adopted the quality improvement activities of the quality control circle, grasping the reasons affecting nurses' untimely and incorrect identification and treatment of ventilator alarms by ICU nurses, analyzing and discussing the 4 aspects of cognition, behavior, management and process, setting goals, formulating and implementing countermeasures, and conducting quality control on the process of implementation. The number of ventilator alarms, nurses' handling time and occurrence of adverse events in the same time period of patients in both groups were compared and studied,as well as nurses' knowledge of alarms. Results The knowledge rate of cardiothoracic nurses about the cause of ventilator alarms increased from 52.50%to 97.50%before implementation;the knowledge rate of understanding the meaning of ventilator alarms in English increased from 41.25%to 93.75%before implementation;the correct rate of alarm handling increased from 56.25%to 95.65%before implementation;there were also significant differences in the number of alarms and nurses' handling time of alarms when compared(P<0.05).Conclusion The quality control circle activity improved cardiothoracic surgery nurses'awareness of ventilator alarms and the ability to identify and prevent the handling of ventilator alarms in a timely manner.
