Effects of PDCA Cycle Method on Rational Application of Antibacterial Drugs in Hospitals in Transition Period
Objective To introduce the management practices employed by Wuming Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, during its transformation from a secondary grassroots hospital to a directly affiliated teaching hospital, which focuses on the application of the PDCA cycle method to promote the rational use of antimicrobial agents. And to explore the impact of this approach on the appropriate application of antibiotics within the hospital setting. Methods The PDCA cycle method was adopted in Wuming Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from January to December 2021.Compared with January to February 2020 before the adoption of PDCA cycle method, the national monitoring indicators such as the rate of pathogenic detection, prescription comments, the utilization rate of antibiotics, the intensity of antibiotics use and the average length of hospital stay were compared, and the impact of PDCA cycle method on the clinical application and management of antibiotics in hospitals was evaluated. Results The rate of pathogen detection before antibiotic treatment in 2021 was 65.591%,which was higher than 39.333%in 2020,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).In 2021,the utilization rate of antibiotics of 41.618%,and the average length of hospitalization of hospitalized patients using antibiotics(8.522±0.042)d were decreased compared with 43.128%,(9.387±0.047)d in 2020,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).The qualified rate of prescription reviews in 2021 were 98.001%,which was higher than 97.297%in 2020,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The intensity of antimicrobial use was 35.215 DDDs,which was better than 36.677 DDDs in 2020.Conclusion After the adoption of PDCA cycle method, the pre-examination and prescription use of antibiotics in hospitals directly affiliated to medical colleges in the transition period is more standardized and scientific. The hospital will constantly sum up experience on the existing basis, make continuous improvement, enhance treatment effect and protect people's health rights and interests.
