Occupational hazards and key protective measures associated with the incineration of radioactive combustible wastes in the nuclear power plant
Objective To identify and analyze the occupational hazards and assess their hazard level during the incineration of radioactive wastes in the nuclear power plant, then evaluate the feasibility of protective facilities, and provide relevant guidance suggestions. Methods Based on the analysis results of the process and raw and auxiliary materials system related to waste incineration, occupational hazards during radioactive waste incineration in the nuclear power plant were identified by systems-engineering approach, and their impact on health were analyzed. Results During the incineration of radioactive wastes, the main radiation hazards were external γ irradiation and radioactive aerosol inhala-tion-induced internal irradiation, and the main non-radioactive hazards were toxic and harmful substances in fumes emitted during the incineration,as well as high temperature, dusts and sodium hydroxide produced in the process system.Conclu-sion The collection and temporary storage of post-incineration ash and residues are the critical control points for hazards control and prevention in the process. And priority should be given to the sealing of the process system, the shielding of γradiation, and the purification efficiency of the fume treatment system using adsorption.
