Identification and analysis of an Actinomyces turicensis strain
Objective For the identification and analysis of non-dominant bacteria on the plate of clinical sample culture, microbiological inspection staff should be cautious to avoid causing missed detection of pathogenic bacteria in the submitted sam-ples.Methods Through purification, smear staining and microscopic examination, the suspect bacteria were identified by VITEK 2 Compact automatic microbial identification system and French Meriere VITEK mass spectrometer(VITEK MS).Results The VITEK 2 ANC identification card has some difficulties in the identification of actinomycetes, which can be confirmed by mass spectrometry analysis.By purifying and identifying the suspicious bacteria on the original culture plate of the sample submitted for examination in this case, the mass spectrometry identification result showed that the suspicious bacteria was Actinomyces turicensis, with a confidence of 99.9%.It contributes to a final diagnosis of the patient and the recovery under clin-ical attending physician's standardize treatment. Conclusion Microbial testing technicians need to pay attention to the pres-ence of small colonies in the plate and can prioritize the use of mass spectrometry analysis technology for preliminary identifica-tion.Clinical physicians and microbiological testing technicians need to improve their understanding of actinomycosis.
