Studies on Cordyceps nelumboides and its Akanthomyces anamorph
Some specimens of Cordyceps, collected from Wanfoshan Nature Preserve in Anhui, were identified as Cordyceps nelumboides. A species of Akanthomyces isolated from its ascospores was determined to be its anamorph and the fungal characteristics were described for the first time throughout the world. Some fruiting bodies formed on artificial culture media as well as their shape and color were identical to those of natural specimens, strongly supporting the fact that this species of Akanthomyces was the anamorph of C. nelumboides. Moreover, it was found that the description of secondary ascospores of C. nelumboides by KOBAYASI and SHIMIZU was perhaps wrong.
