The effect of adjuvant therapy with Clostridium butyricum on the distribution of intestinal microbiota and intestinal mucosal permeability in epilepsy patients
Objective To observe the effect of adjuvant therapy with Clostridium butyricum on the distribution of intest-inal microbiota and intestinal mucosal permeability in epilepsy patients, providing a reference for the treatment. Methods A total of 110 epilepsy patients who admitted to our hospital from June 2019 to June 2021 were enrolled and randomly divided into a control group and an observation group with 55 cases each. Both groups received conventional anti-epileptic treatment, while the observation group received additional Clostridium butyricum treatment for 6 months. The ef-fectiveness of epilepsy treatment in the two groups were evaluated. The changes in intestinal microbiota and mucosal per-meability before and after treatment were compared, and the safety of medication was observed. Results The curative ef-fects of epilepsy and epileptiform discharge of EEG in the observation group were better than those in the control group(all P<0.05).After treatment, the intestinal E.coli decreased while Enterococcus,Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in-creased in the observation group(all P<0.05);LM,D-lactic acid and endotoxin decreased in the observation group(P<0.05).There were no significant changes in these indicator levels in the control group after treatment(all P>0.05).There were no serious adverse reactions in either group(P<0.05).Conclusion Clostridium butyricum is effective as an adjuvant treatment of epilepsy, which can improve the distribution of intestinal microbiota, reduce intestinal mucosal per-meability,and has high safety.
