Overview of scientific consensus and practical guidelines for probiotics
At present, probiotics are increasingly recognized by the scientific community and consumers. With the in-creasing research on probiotics, scientific organizations in most countries and regions have put forward relevant scientific consensus and practical guidelines for probiotics, which, however,is not uniform on a global scale. In order to guide healthy industrial development and protect consumer interests, this paper aims to systematically summarize the current con-sensus and practical guidelines of probiotics in major countries and organizations, and provide scientific and feasible prac-tical guidelines for nutrition and health providers and consumers. Most of the existing practical guidelines and scientific consensus suggest the use of specific probiotic strains in selected conditions.Five of the conditions are recommended by two or more practical guidelines or scientific consensus with mentioning the dose and timing of interventions, including acute gastroenteritis,antibiotic-associated diarrhea, nosocomial infection diarrhea, infantile colic, and necrotizing entero-colitis.However,more high-quality studies are still needed to support the systematic and widespread use of probiotics.
