The regulation of bone metabolism by gut microbiota:research progress
Bone guarantees its integrity and physiological activity through continuous renewal.During this process osteo-blasts and osteoclasts are two critical cells. They can ensure the bone homeostasis only when they reach a dynamic balance.Without the dynamic balance, bone metabolism will be interfered and even progress to osteoporosis. The disease is not only highly prevalent but also insidious, frequently diagnosed in the form of osteoporotic fracture, which is one of the major causes of disability and death in the elderlies. The gut microbiota is known to be innumerable, and has a clear correlation with various diseases of human. The"gut microbiota-bone axis"has also received increasing attention. The gut microbiota has been found to mediate metabolites, immune system and neuroendocrine system to affect the proliferation and differenti-ation of osteoblasts and/or osteoclasts, thereby disrupting bone homeostasis. This review summarizes the progress in re-search on gut microbiota acting on bone metabolism and its mechanisms.
