Bladder paraganglioma was misdiagnosed as urothelial carcinoma intraoperatively: a case report and literature review
Objective To investigate the major histologic features of bladder paraganglioma and present the reasons that led to misdiagnosis by frozen section for improving the intraoperative diagnosis level. Methods Frozen and paraffin sections of bladder paraganglioma were studied by hislopathological observation and immunohistochemical staining, and related clinicopathological literatures were reviewed. Results A 48-year-old man presented with com-plaintment of gross hematuria. Frozen sections showed that the tumor was of more nodular growth pattern with muscularis propria involved in local area. Diffuse growth and nested patterns were present within the nodules with delicate fibrovascular stroma apparently. Cytoplasm of tumor cells was eosinophilic. The lesion was misdiagnosed as urothelial carcinoma intraoperatively. Histologic examination and immunohistochemical studies of the tumor indicated bladder paraganglioma. Conclusions Bladder paraganglioma is a rarely tumor that can be easily misdiagnosed as malignant tumor by frozen section. The disease should be enforced to study and avoid being operated excessively and unnecessarily.
