Relationships between Carotid Artery Intima-media Thickness and Serum Interleukin-6 and Interleukin-18 on TIA patients
Objective To investigate the mechanisms of carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and the relationships between carotid artery IMT and the serum levels of interleukin 6, interleukin 18. Methods Carotid artery IMT values were prospectively measured by color Doppler ultrasound in sixty-six cases of transient ischemia attack (TIA) patients who as the study group, and forty heathy volunteers as control group. The study groups were divided into two subgroups according to IMT larger or lower than 1. 0 mm. Serum IL-6, IL-18 levels were determined in all patients and volunteers with radioimmunoassay(RIA)and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EL1SA) respectively. Results There were significant differences in IL-6 and IL-18 levels between IMT≥l. 0 mm subgroups and control group (P<0. 05, P<0. 01). The IL-6 and IL-18 levels between IMT≥l. 0 mm and IMT<1. 0 mm subgroups had significant differences (P<0. 05). The levels of serum IL-18 were positively correlated with IMT values in IMT≥1.0 mm subgroups! Pearson correlation coefficients r=0. 551,P<0. 01), and the levels of serum IL 6 had no correlation with IMT values in IMT≥l. 0 mm subgroups(Pearson correlation coefficients r=0. 303,P=0. 058). Conclusion The levels of serum IL-6, IL-18 are increased in TIA patients with IMT thickness increased. Serum IL-18 level is positively correlated with carotid artery IMT,and no correlation between serum IL-6 level and IMT. IL-6 and IL-18 may involve in the development of AS.
