Due to the increasing demands of owners for cargo capacity and the growing construction cost of ship-yards,the design of bulk carrier needs upgrading continuously.Taking the 88 000 DWT bulk carriers as an example,this paper decreases the carrier weight by rational structural arrangement and optimization based on satisfying the specifications.Meanwhile,it balances the weight reduction and structural number decrease to lower the comprehen-sive ship building cost.The proposed optimization suggestions can serve as references for subsequent bulk carrier de-sign.
