Study on Properties of Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate in Cleansing Product
The properties of sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate,an approved new cosmetics ingredient, including its thickening capabilities, transparency characteristics, and sebum removal efficacy were explored and compared to commonly employed mild surfactants. The 8%main surfactant and 4%cocamidopropyl betaine were compounded, and the thickening difficulty of each surfactant was investigated by the effect of sodium chloride on viscosity. The results indicated that sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate can achieve a viscosity of up to 5000 mPa·s by 0.5%salt supplementation, whereas conventional amino acid anionic surfactants necessitate greater salt concentrations or exhibit resistance to thickening by salt. The transparency of 6%surfactant aqueous solution within the pH range of 5 to 8 was investigated at room temperature and at 4℃.The experimental results showed that sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate has excellent transparency. However, apart from sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, changes in temperature or pH values result in different degrees of opacity or precipitation phenomena among common amino acid anionic surfactants. To evaluate its effectiveness in removing sebum stains, the degreasing power of a 0.05%surfactant aqueous solution is assessed by measuring the difference in whiteness values of the cloth before and after cleaning. The experiment found that sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate has stronger degreasing power than most amino acid anionic surfactants, approaching that of sodium laureth sulfate(SLES)and sodium methyl cocoyl taurate.
