Analysis of penis sympathetic skin response in patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction
Objective To investigate the changes of penis sympathetic skin response(PSSR)among patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction(ED).Methods A total of 96 patients admitted to Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University School of Medicine due to non-traumatic ED and underwent nocturnal penile tumescence test(NPT)and penile neuroelectrophysiological examination were selected as study subjects.Among these patients,68 with effective erections whose NPT results showed a single erection duration with peins tip hardness≥60%was ≥10 min were divided into the psychogenic ED group, and 28 without effective erections for at least two consecutive nights NPT were classified in the non-traumatic organic ED group.Age,height, weight, course of disease, days of examination, total effective erections, effective erections on the first day, effective erections on the second day, effective erections on the third day, maintenance duration of penis tip hardness≥60%,maintenance duration of penis base hardness ≥60%,tip tumescence perimeter, base tumescence perimeter, latency and amplitude of PSSR were compared between the two groups. Results There were no significant differences in the height, weight, course of disease, days of examination and amplitude of PSSR between the two groups(P>0.05).The age of psychogenic ED group was lower than that of non-traumatic organic ED group(P<0.01),and the total effective erections, effective erections on the first day, effective erections on the second day, effective erections on the third day, maintenance duration of penis tip hardness≥60%,maintenance duration of penis base hardness≥60%,tip tumescence perimeter and base tumescence perimeter were higher in psychogenic ED group than non-traumatic organic ED group(P<0.01),and the latency of PSSR was shorter in psychogenic ED group than non-traumatic organic ED group(P<0.01).Conclusions Patients with psychogenic ED have a short latency of PSSR and may also experience sympathetic hyperexcitability. The PSSR examination can be used as an auxiliary method for the evaluation of psychogenic ED.
