The method of tonifying the kidney and generating essence was developed from the classical traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)theory of the kidney storing essence.As an important part of the TCM theory of viscera,the theory of the kidney storing essence has far-reaching significance in guiding future generations.The development process of the kidney storing essence and the method of tonifying kidney and generating essence has rarely been reviewed in the literature.This paper starts from the perspective of the TCM ancient inheriting literature inherited,summarizes the understanding of the theory of kidney storing essence and the method of tonifying kidney and generating essence by medical practitioners during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States,Qin and Han dynasties,Wei,Jin and Sui dynasties,Tang,Song,Jin and Yuan dynasties,and Ming and Qing dynasties,in the hope that the origin of the theory of kidney storing essence and the method of tonifying kidney and generating essence can be explored and modern scholars can be enlightened.
