Analysis of the regulation of icariin on male infertility based on hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis
In recent years, infertility has become one of the major social and health problems of contemporary men.The etiology of male infertility is highly intricate.Despite the existence of numerous treatment modalities for male infertility, these treatments are relatively costly and yield suboptimal outcomes. The herb epimedium is a regular remedy in the field of andrology, playing a significant role in the treatment of male infertility with traditional Chinese medicine. The main chemical component of epimedium is known as icariin. In recent years, research on icariin has primarily focused on its potential in treating erectile dysfunction, inhibiting tumor cell growth, controlling hypertension and coronary heart disease, etc. However, there has been relatively limited research conducted on its effects on infertility. Therefore, based on the theory of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, this paper thoroughly elucidates the mechanism of icariin on infertility through pretesticular, testicular, and post-testicular causes, aiming to offer insights for clinical management of infertility.
