Research Progress on Milk Performance and Nutrient Utilization of Dairy Cow Fed Low Protein Diet
Nowadays, the continuous development of intensive and large-scale husbandry as well the excessive pursuit for high-protein feedstuff of farmers have caused increasingly growth of high-quality protein feeds such as soybean meal.Meanwhile, the concepts of"carbon peak"and"carbon neutrality"also pointed out a new direction for the livestock industry, that is,to reduce pollutant emission and adapt sustainable development. Therefore, the technology of low protein diet gradually emerged and pullulated due to the demands of improving productive performance, decreasing cost, and cutting down the fecal and urinary nitrogen emissions. At present, low protein technology has acquired remarkable effects in monogastric animals. However, the development of low protein in ruminants is relatively lagging because of unique digestive structure and complex microbiota, and the effects of low protein on milk performance and nutrient utilization are still ambiguous. In summary, this article summarized the effects of low protein diet on milk performance and nutrient digestion of dairy cow as well expected to provide theoretical basis and scientific guidance for farms to customize an economical and reasonable formula, and for animal husbandry to insist the sustainable development.
