Recent Progress on Effects and Mechanisms of Propolis Polyphenols on Mastitis in Dairy Cows
Bovine mastitis is an inflammatory disease which caused by various factors including pathogenic infections. The severe mastitis could result in a significant reduction in milk production and quality, further leading to serious economic losses in the dairy industry.Mastitis may be regulated by some signaling pathways such as NF-κB,MAPK,JAK-STAT,PI3K-AKT-mTOR and Nrf2-ARE.Propolis is gathered from plant resin and mixed with the secretion of the worker bees.Propolis riching in polyphenolic compounds has been proven to play an effective role in the prevention of bovine mastitis by killing mastitis pathogens, alleviating inflammation, and acting as a vaccine adjuvant. This article outlines the mechanism of mastitis, and summarizes the effects of propolis extracts and polyphenols on relieving bovine mastitis, which will provide a theoretical basis for better application of propolis polyphenols in the prevention of mastitis in dairy cows.
