Molecular Mechanisms of Programmed Cell Death Regulating Follicular Atresia in Animals
Follicular atresia is an intricately regulated phenomenon that is closely associated with the programmed cell death of granulosa cells.Studies have revealed that apoptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis operate either independently or in conjunction with one another to govern follicular atresia and exert an impact on ovarian function. This study provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms and the associated factors underlying these five modes of programmed cell death in the regulation of animal follicular atresia, which can serve as a valuable reference for mitigating follicular atresia caused by programmed granulosa cell death and enhancing the reproductive outcomes of livestock and poultry.
