Report on the After-school Life Status of Children in the Context of"Double Reduction"Policy:After-school Learning
Since the implementation of the"double reduction"policy, students'school time at primary and secondary schools has been extended, but they still have around two-thirds of their time out of school.Therefore,after-school learning plays an irreplaceable role in improving students'quality competency, sound personality, and harmonious physical and mental development.A research group set up with the joint efforts of the China National Children's Center,College of Education at Capital Normal University, and Institute of Social Science Survey at Peking University, has conducted a national sample survey on the after-school status of children in the context of"double reduction"policy in 12 cities of 11 provinces across China from March to June in 2023.The research, based on collected data, has an analysis of the participation of children in after-school education and draws the following conclusions.First, the duration of in-school homework is effectively controlled, but the duration of after-school assignment needs to be controlled.Second, students with better socioeconomic backgrounds have a higher participation rate in after-school learning.Third, urban students have a higher participation rate in after-school learning.Fourth, parents attach great importance to assigning homework to their children, but students have less affection for their parents'homework.Fifth, students have a higher preference for on-site venue visits, but either the frequency or time span of their participation in venue visits is relatively lower. Then, the research team gives its policy recommendations as follows:we should increase the investment in after-school education and promote the balanced development of regional after-school education;we should monitor the homework burden on and off campus to guarantee the healthy growth of students'physical and mental health;and we should establish a completed family education guidance service system to change parents'idea of family education.
