"New Empiricism"Pointing to Complexity:Research on the Paradigm Evolution and Innovation of Educational Research
In the data-driven era of the Internet, paradigm innovation is necessary for educational research to discover patterns of complexity in education and propel educational transformation.Data-intensive research in edu-cation represents a new research paradigm that might be termed New Empiricism.Ontologically,New Empiri-cism posits that data exists in a distributed"experience"form.Epistemologically,it asserts that these data are ex-periential,constrained by simple rules, requiring modeling of data relationships to uncover unrecognized funda-mental patterns.Methodologically, the focus is on complex system modeling, aiming to deeply understand the ele-ments and agents at different levels in educational complex systems, their interactions, and evolutionary mecha-nisms.This methodology also guides educational research in collecting procedural data and finding appropriate ways to reveal how collective complex features emerge. To achieve the goal of research paradigm innovation,ed-ucational research needs to actively embrace interdisciplinary collaborations, such as human computation and simu-lation,so as to generate authentic and rich research data in educational practice.Additionally,it should be able to simulate and model the evolution of educational systems over extended time scales.Educational data-intensive research under the New Empiricism paradigm should not blindly endorse scientism or simply apply research para-digms from the natural sciences.Instead,it should adopt a more inclusive logic of abduction, induction, and de-duction to advance our understanding of complex educational phenomena, and reflect the academic confidence of innovation in educational research paradigms.
