Comparative study on the components of smoke particulate matter between representative electrically heated tobacco products and combustion cigarettes
[Background]Electrically heated tobacco products(e-HTPs)share basic sensory characteristics with combustion cigarettes. However, due to their different heating mode, they differ significantly from combustion cigarettes in aroma characteristics. To elucidate the aroma characteristics of e-HTPs,a comparative study on the smoke composition between representative e-HTPs and combustion cigarettes was conducted.[Methods]The smoke composition of typical combustion cigarettes and representative e-HTPs were analyzed using an online liquid chromatography-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(LC-GC/MS)system to compare the compositional differences between e-HTPs and combustion cigarettes.[Results](1)e-HTPs contain fewer smoke components than those in combustion cigarettes.(2)little difference was observed in the smoke composition among the four different types of e-HTPs,but the aroma characteristics of HTP-1 closely resembled those of blended combustion cigarettes.(3)Damascone,Hydroxyacetone,β-caryophyllene,phytol,and Linalool are the characteristic components of e-HTPs,reflecting their typical sensory characteristics of e-HTPs including tobacco's original aroma, baking, and roasting sweet aromas.[Conclusion]The smoke composition of the four representative e-HTPs exhibits specific characteristics, but essentially represents a subset of combustion cigarette smoke. Moreover, smoke composition significantly influences the flavor characteristics between e-HTPs and combustion cigarettes.
