The research advances of Calycanthaceae were summarized in this paper. Calycanthaceae included two genera: Calycanthus and Chimonanthus. In Calycanthus there are 3 species and 1 variety, while 4 species and 1 variety exist in Chimonanthus. Furthermore the cultivars of Calycanthus praecox were classified into Concolor Group, Intermedius Group and Patens Group. The breeding methods mainly applied in this family included seedling selection, bud mutation and hybridization. The seed propagation and asexual propagation were used in this family. The volatile components in the family mainly included terpenoids and benzenoids. The non-volatile compounds were alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids and so on. The molecular biology technology was used in the recent studies of the family. In the exploitation and utilization of C. praecox, the progresses were obtained in miniascaping, cultivation and preservation of cut flower, processing technology of scented tea, exploitation of essence and medicine.
