Finite element method analysis of the effects of commonly used occlusal plates on temporomandibular joint stresses
Objective To study and compare the stress effects of three types of occlusal plates on the temporomandibular joint.METHODS:A three-dimensional model of the maxilla and mandible and the whole dental row was established by the three-dimensional finite element method, and a stable occlusal plate,a relaxed occlusal plate, and a pivotal occlusal plate were simulated in the maxilla, and the mandible was loaded with forces of the same direction and magnitude to compare the stress changes of the condyle, articular disc, and temporal bone articular surfaces when the occlusal plate was not worn with the three types of occlusal plates commonly used in clinical practice.RESULTS:The stress magnitudes and displacement magnitudes of the condyle, articular disc, and temporal bone articular surfaces were reduced when simulating the three occlusal plates compared with those without the occlusal plates.CONCLUSION:Occlusal plates can effectively reduce the stress in the temporomandibular joint and have clinical practical significance for the treatment of TMD.
