The Effect of Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for the Treatment of Elderly Rib Fractures and Its Impact on Respiratory Function
Objective:Explore the effectiveness of open reduction and internal fixation of rib fractures in elderly patients and its impact on respiratory function. Methods:A total of 96 elderly patients with rib fractures admitted to our hospital from May 2021 to September 2023 were selected and randomly divided into a study group(n=48)and a control group(n=48)using a random number table method. The control group received conservative treatment after external fixation with thoracic straps, while the study group received open reduction and internal fixation of rib fractures. The clinical indicators, degree of pain, respiratory function, and complications of the two groups were compared. Results:The study group used less pain relief than the control group(P<0.05),and had shorter time to get out of bed and stay in hospital(P<0.05);The visual analogue scale(VAS)score decreased 7 days after surgery in both groups(P<0.05),and the study group had a lower score than the control group(P<0.05);The respiratory function[forced vital capacity(FVC),forced expiratory volume in the first second(FEV1),and maximum ventilation volume(MVV)]improved 7 days after surgery in both groups(P<0.05),and the study group had higher respiratory function than the control group(P<0.05);The incidence of complications in the study group was 4.17%(2/48),which was lower than the control group's 20.83%(10/48)(P<0.05).Conclusion:The application of open reduction and internal fixation of rib fractures in the treatment of elderly rib fracture patients can improve clinical indicators, alleviate pain, improve respiratory function, and reduce complications.
