Aanlysis of 9 cases of Madelung's disease and literature review
Objective To discuss the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of Madelung's disease. Methods Detailed clinical data of 9 cases of Madelung's disease were reviewed and analyzed. Results All the 9 cases appeared symmetric lipid hyperplasia on shoulder, superior clavicular, neck, mandible and axillary. All the patients had 15-30 years history of alcohol abuse. Dyspnea and hands numbness appeared in two cases respectively. All had hepatic function abnormality. All the patients accepted operation and were satisfied with the result of treatment. There were no relapse in 1-5 years follow-up due to the abstinence from alcohol in this group. Conclusion Madelung's disease is characterized with multiple symmetric lipid hyperplasia on neck. Most of the disease have relationship with chronic alcoholism and always have hepatic function abnormality. The purpose of operation is to improve the appearance and alleviate dyspnea. The result is satisfactary after operation and abstinence from alcohol.
