SWOT Analysis on the application of dentistry laser in clinical practice
Objective To evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in the application of dentistry lasers in dental clinical practice, and discuss if the laser can replace high speed handpiece in the dental treatment. Methods Based on the latest information about development of dentistry laser, a questionnaire was carried out among dentists, dental students and dental patients, to collect essential information for the SWOT analysis. Results Through the SWOT analysis, the dentists and patients consider low infection rate and good hemostatic effect as the main strength factors of dentistry lasers, while the blindness during the operation was received as the main weaknesses factors. Great support of the patients with dental anxiety is the main opportunities factor, and the uncertainty of the treatment outcome is the main threat factor. Conclusions Lasers can be safe and accurate in cutting tooth hard tissue with relatively lower vibration, noise and can obviously decrease the patients' anxiety during dental treatment. However, the operative blindness as well as the uncertainty of treatment outcome remain to be the key problems needed to be further studied. Besides, dentists should positively follow the development of dentistry lasers, and both the patients and dentists should pay more attention to the clinical application, further investigation and research of dentistry lasers. Obtaining the governments' support should also be considered so as to finally successfully bring benefit to both the dentists and patients during clinical practice.
