Research progress on the mechanism of action of curcumin in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is an important manifestation of diabetic microangiopathy, one of the many complications of diabetes, which can lead to decreased vision, and is one of the major causes of blindness in the world's middle-aged and aged people, causing a serious decline in the quality of life of the affected population. Its pathogenesis is related to various factors, such as hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, inflammatory response, and oxidative stress, but the specific pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. At present, the therapeutic effect of DR is limited,so finding drugs developed for DR has become an urgent task.Curcumin has various biological activities, including anti-apoptotic autophagy,anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,anti-angiogenic,and anti-tumor activities. In recent years, many studies have also confirmed that curcumin can prevent a variety of diabetes complications, including retinopathy caused by diabetes. However, there is currently no definitive mechanism of action of curcumin in the treatment of DR.This article combines the latest research progress at home and abroad to explore the mechanism of curcumin's protective effect on DR.
