Research progress of NLRP3 inflammasome in ophthalmic diseases
The NLRP3 proteome in the NOD-like receptor family is an important component of the innate immune system, which can be activated by various stimuli, including ion fluence, mitochondrial dysfunction, production of reactive oxygen species, and lysosomal damage. They mediate the activation of cysteine-containing aspartate proteolytic enzyme-1(caspase-1)and the secretion of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β(IL-1β)and interleukin-18(IL-18),leading to various cell death. In ophthalmic diseases, the pathogenesis and activation mode of many diseases are not yet clear, but through the research and exploration of NLRP3 inflammasome, the pathogenesis and mechanism of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, glaucoma, and other diseases are clearer. This article reviews the biological characteristics and activation and regulatory mechanisms of NLRP3 inflammasomes, their relationship with related eye diseases, and the latest research status.
