Objective To investigate the medication rule and prescription characteristics of Lin Tiandong,a renowned physician,in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD),and to inherit his academic thought and medication experience. Methods Professor Lin Tiandong's prescriptions of Chinese materia medica in the treatment of COPD were collected, and statistics on the nature and flavour, meridian tropism and efficacy of the drugs were made.Excel,Cytoscape 3.6.1,Weka 3.8 and Spss 25.0 were used to make statistical analysis on the data. Results Lin Tiandong's high-frequency drugs in the treatment of COPD were herba ephedrae, perilla fruit, processed pinellia tuber, bitter almond, common coltsfoot flower, red tangerine peel, hogfennel root, platycodon root, etc. In terms of efficacy, most drugs belong to the category of phlegm resolving, cough relieving, and asthma relieving, followed by drugs tonifying deficiency and regulating qi and dampness. The properties of drugs were warm and mild. The frequencies of drug flavor were pungent, bitter and sweet from high to low.The meridian tropism of drugs was mainly lung meridian, followed by spleen meridian, heart meridian, stomach meridian and large intestine meridian.By analyzing the association rules of high-frequency drugs,it was found that the compatibility rules of drug pairs were herba ephedrae-processed pinellia tuber, followed by perilla fruit-processed pinellia tuber, herba ephedrae-bitter almond, perilla fruit-bitter almond, etc. Conclusion Professor Lin Tiandong's key to treating COPD lies in treating the lung, taking resolving phlegm, promoting blood circulation and regulating qi circulation as the key to treating the symptoms, and giving consideration to the spleen and stomach, which provides some reference experience for contemporary physicians in dialectical treatment.
