Research on the correlation between serum ferritin and bilirubin levels and metabolic indices in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus combined with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Objective To explore the relationship between serum ferritin and bilirubin levels and metabolic indexes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)combined with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),so as to guide the prediction of the onset of fatty liver disease and treatment. Methods A total of 306 patients with T2DM attending the Second Affiliated Hospital of Baotou Medical College,Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology from January 2020 to December 2021 were selected for the study, and were divided into the NAFLD group(n=158)and the non-NAFLD group(n=148)according to the presence or absence of NAFLD,and the levels of serum ferritin and bilirubin,as well as related metabolic indexes, were measured.Bilirubin and serum ferritin levels and their correlation with metabolic indexes were compared between the two groups. Results The serum ferritin level of patients in the NAFLD group was higher than that of the non-NAFLD group, and the bilirubin level was lower than that of the non-NAFLD group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.001).Triglyceride(r=-0.191)and body mass index(r=-0.148)were negatively correlated with total bilirubin in the NAFLD group(P<0.05).Triglyceride was positively correlated with serum ferritin(r=0.209,P<0.05).Conclusion Bilirubin, which has antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and immune response inhibiting effects, may reduce the incidence of NAFLD in T2DM patients.Serum ferritin is closely related to the pathogenesis of NAFLD,is a predictor of liver injury, and may be a potential therapeutic target.
