A qualitative study of self-management status in patients with ulcerative colitis
Objective To investigate the self-management status and health education needs of patients with ulcerative colitis. Methods A total of 13 patients with ulcerative colitis admitted to the Department of Gastroenterology Ⅱ of Sanming First Hospital Affiliated to Fujian Medical University from January to December 2022 were selected using the phenomenological research method.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with them, which were analyzed and summarized into themes using Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method. Results The self-management status in patients with ulcerative colitis can be summarized into 3 major themes:disease cognition, disease management attitudes, and disease management behaviors.Disease cognition includes lack of basic knowledge of the disease, lack of ability to acquire knowledge on an ongoing basis, and low acceptance of knowledge of the disease.Disease management attitudes include positive, belittling, and pessimistic types.Disease management behaviors include insufficient awareness of health behaviors, dilemmas in the practice of health behaviors, and self-exploration of health promotion. Conclusion The current situation of patients with ulcerative colitis in terms of disease cognition, attitudes and self-management behaviors is not optimistic. It is difficult for patients to receive systematic and standardized education on disease knowledge and continued nursing after diagnosis, leading to some non-standard and unscientific ways of coping with the disease.Healthcare professionals should meet the individual needs of patients for health education and enhance the continued nursing services to improve patients'cognitive level, change their behavioral attitudes and improve their quality of life.
