Research progress on non-surgical treatment of piriformis syndrome
Piriform syndrome (PS) mostly occurs in middle-aged and above patients. The cause of this disease is degeneration and injury of the piriformis muscle after traction, and stenosis of the sciatic nerve at the piriformis muscle, which causes compression of nerves and blood vessels in this area, leading to radiative pain in the lower back, buttocks, and posterior lateral lower limbs of patients. This disease is often overlooked in clinical practice, and there is a lack of data research on the high-risk population for this disease. In clinical practice, there are many methods to treat piriformis syndrome, and the surgical treatment is expensive and risky, while conservative treatment mainly includes acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, medicine, acupotomy, physiotherapy, and so on,and is gradually favored by people. Each method has its own advantages, and in clinical practice, combination therapy is mostly used. The recurrence rate of the disease is high,so patients need to adhere to the functional exercises in the later stage to consolidate the efficacy of the treatment. At present, there are increasing reports of cases of PS in clinical practice. This article analyzes the relevant literature about non-surgical treatment of PS in recent years, and systematically summarizes the therapeutic means and clinical efficacy in this field,in order to provide guidance for the treatment of this disease.
