This paper has classified historical materials and modern literature about the syndrome differentiations of diabetes mellitus.Diabetes mainly differentiated into three types in history while it combines differentiations of zang-fu,Qi,blood and body fluid as well as other methods together in modern Chinese medicine,especially emphasizes in treatment of stages.The publication of various guidelines,standards and paths which apply Chinese medicine to prevent and treat Diabetes has greatly improved standardization in diabetes prevention and treatment and leaded an important role in clinical work and research.However,there exists certain variations among different "standards",which is hard to promote in clinical work and research.We should base our future researches on clinical epidemiological methods,survey by using the multi-center and large samples to develop high-level evidence-based clinical trials,involve experts broadly and establish a wide consensus.Eventually develop into an international standard which feature Chinese medicine,be well-recognized andeasy to popularize around the world,thus contribute to the development of traditional Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
