“本草”的含义及英译规范

摘要
在现代文献中,有将“本草”视为中药而将其英译为materia medica,有将“本草”视为药物学著作而英译为book of materia medica或meidicinal works,有的直接将“本草”音译为ben cao.“本草”一词出现多种译法,究其原因是现代文献对“本草”的释史没有达成共识.故通过对古今文献考证可知,“本草”指我国的传统药学或中药,当以ben cao作为其规范英译名.但如果在特定的语境中,即“本草”的含义被限定在“中药”上,materia medica则更能表达出本草之含义.此时可以方便读者理解为根本目的,将“本草”英译为materia medica.
Abstract
In modern literature,Some regard Ben Cao as Chinese medicine and translate it into materia medica.Some regard Ben Cao as pharmacological works and translate it into book of materia medica or meidicinal works.while Some directly translate it into Ben Cao by Chinese Pinyin.The reason why Ben Cao has so many kinds of translations is that there is no consensus on the meaning of it in modern literature.By literature research method,we can know that Ben Cao means traditional Chinese pharmacy or Chinese medicine.We had better use Ben Cao as the standard English translation of it.However,in a specific context,that is,the meaning of Ben Cao is limited to the Chinese medicine,materia medica is more able to express its meaning.At this point,Ben Cao can be translated into materia medica,which can be easilier understood by readers.
