A Corpus-Based Study on the Translations of"Qi"in Inner Canon of Huangdi Translated by Ilza Veith
This paper retrieves and analyzes the translation of"Qi"in the Inner Canon of Huangdi translated by Veith using a bilingual parallel corpus.The study found that in the corpus,the character"气"appears 540 times in 388 sentence pairs,with 91 different translations,which are further classified to 9 categories(frequency above 10).The translation method of"Qi"is mainly free translation,supplemented by annotation,omission and other translations.However,there are also some mistranslations.Therefore,when translating traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)texts,translators should firstly understand the original text and translate on the basis of grasping the meaning.Secondly,TCM classics translators should have solid bilingual language skills and sturdy knowledge of TCM theories.Thirdly,corpus can be used as an important means of TCM classics errata,which is of great significance for enhancing the quality of the translated text and improving the dissemination effect of TCM classics.
