Analysis of English Translation of Antitheses in Materia Medica of South Yunnan in Light of Relevance Translation Theory
As one of the earliest and most complete ancient local works of materia medica in China,Materia Medica of South Yunnan(Dian Nan Ben Cao)has great value in the field of translation research.Taking the typical antitheses in the work as research objects, this paper analyzes the explanatory power of relevance theory on the translation process and the compatibility between relevance theory and Chinese medicine, and then summarizes the principles and compensation strategies for translating antitheses. Moreover, the characteristics of the antitheses should be taken into consideration when translating,in order to maximize the preservation of the original form of antitheses and compensate for cultural blanks in traditional Chinese medicine,so that the readers would avoid unnecessary processing efforts while achieving sufficient contextual effects, and finally achieve the best relevance.
