Effects of Levetiracetam in Combination with Oxcarbazepine and Sodium Valproate on Clinical Symptoms and Cognitive Function in Children with Benign Epilepsy with Central Temporal Spikes Combined with Electrical Status Epilepticus of Sleep
Objective:To investigate the effects of levetiracetam in combination with oxcarbazepine and sodium valproate on clinical symptoms and cognitive function in children with benign epilepsy with central temporal spikes(BECT)combined with electrical status epilepticus of sleep(ESES).Methods:100 children with BECT combined with ESES who were treated in a hospital from April 2020 to April 2022 were selected for the study, and were assigned into a control group and an observation group using the randomized numerical table method, with 50 cases in each group.Oxcarbazepine and sodium valproate were given to the control group, while levetiracetam was added to the treatment of the control group in the observation group. The clinical efficacy, improvement of electroencephalogram(EEG)and electroencephalographic activity before and after the treatment were compared between the two groups, and the cognitive status of the children before and after the treatment was evaluated. The occurrence of adverse reactions during the treatment was recorded. Results:Following treatment, the response rate in the observation group was(92.00%)higher than that of the control group(76.00%,P<0.05).The overall response rate of EEG improvement in the observation group was(74.00%)higher than that of the control group(46.00%,P<0.05).Both treatment regimens can affect the children's EEG wave activity, especially in the α,β,θ and δ bands;and compared with the control group, patients in the observation group showed more significant changes in these bands(P<0.05).Before treatment, there was no statistically significant difference between the scores of the two groups in terms of operational IQ,full scale IQ,and verbal IQ(P<0.05);after treatment, all scores of the observation group were elevated and better than those of the control group(P<0.05).There was no statistical difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups(P<0.05).Conclusion:Compared with the treatment regimen of oxcarbazepine in combination with sodium valproate, the efficacy of levetiracetam in combination with oxcarbazepine and sodium valproate in the treatment of BECT combined with ESES in children was superior, which was able to effectively increase the treatment efficiency and the overall response in terms of EEG improvement, and improve the cognitive function of the children.
