This paper briefly reviews the development process of ecological compensation mechanism from proposal to further improvement and the situation of ecological compensation in some provinces(cities).Introduced the experience and practice of realizing the full coverage of horizontal ecological compensation among counties in Shandong province.The significance of watershed ecological compensation in Shandong province was summarized,and some suggestions for the next step of water ecological environment management were put forward.
